Johnson Comments Regarding Student Loan Votes

Washington, D.C. – Senator Ron Johnson (WI) commented on the two votes taken today in the Senate regarding interest rates on certain student loans:

“I welcome a real debate in the Senate on the rising cost of colleges and universities.  Regrettably, Senate Democrats have instead set up a political vote – one that will do little to ensure that students can afford higher education.

“Our system of higher education should be focused on giving young people the skills they need to compete in a demanding and changing economic climate. Instead, government at all levels has subsidized an ever more expensive system. The exploding cost of higher education leaves too many young people buried in debt – and today’s votes won’t change this in any meaningful way.

“We need less government intervention in higher education – not more.  Congress should focus on encouraging new models of post-secondary education that are both affordable and effective for American students and their families.”
