WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, appeared on Fox News’ “Your World” Thursday to discuss the group of migrants approaching the U.S. border and the recent attempted bomb attacks.
Excerpts from Senator Johnson’s appearance are below and video can be found here.
“Our system is so broken, we have stupid laws, we have precedents, we have legal loopholes that are being exploited right now. We incentivize people to come to this country illegally because we reward them for coming here. They get in illegally because of these loopholes. Once they get here, because of the adjudication process, because of the endless appeal process, they by and large have been able to stay and that creates greater incentives for more people to come.”
“We have never solved this problem. We have all of these bills – they’re named, they’re titled like they're going to solve the problem, but they don't. What we really need to do is we have to gather the information, we have to do a root cause analysis and we actually have to fix this problem. We're trying to do that right now with the family separation issue. I was back in D.C. yesterday meeting with (the Department of Homeland Security), and majority and minority staff of our committee, trying to just solve that one aspect by going through the problem solving process.”
About the mailed devices:
“From my standpoint, whoever did this, it is sick, it is despicable and I hope they're brought to justice as quickly as possible.”
“On the big issue, the overall goal: We all want a safe, prosperous, secure America, and we are concerned about each other. If we were, as political figures, to concentrate on those goals, I think we’d do a lot better in terms of ramping down the rhetoric and providing greater civility.”
