Year in Review

It's been one year since Sen. Johnson took over as chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.   What's happened since? Well, good news doesn't make headlines, so here are the facts you might have missed.

In 2015, the committee:

• Approved 55 bills, all with bipartisan support 
• 25 of the bills were passed by the Senate 
• 18 bills were signed into law 
• 50 full committee hearings, and 14 subcommittee hearings 
• Covered topics from attacks in Paris and San Bernardino to tragedies at the VA

Sen. Johnson said, "I am proud of the work that this committee started in 2015, but more must be done. In the year ahead, the committee will continue to pursue bipartisan solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems. I look forward to working with my colleagues to carry this work forward in 2016 as our committee strives to improve the economic and national security of all Americans."

WWII Hero Lt. Col. James “Maggie” Megellas

Sen. Johnson welcomed Lt. Col. James “Maggie” Megellas to the United States Capitol last week. Megellas is originally from Fond du Lac and is one of our nation’s most revered soldiers. He served with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during World War II and is recognized as the most decorated officer in the history of the division.

Sen. Johnson introduced legislation, S. 1826, last July to name the Fond du Lac post office for Lt. Col. Megellas. The legislation passed the Senate by unanimous consent in August, and Johnson hopes to see it signed into law soon.

“It is a privilege to recognize Lt. Col. Megellas,” he said, “one of the finest among us. His heroic actions helped ensure the liberation of Europe and our nation’s continued freedom.”

Ron at Brooke Industries

Sen. Johnson got the opportunity to visit Brooke Industries in Fond du Lac last week. The company is a private, not-for-profit manufacturing and rehabilitation facility that offers an opportunity to work to people with disabilities. Ron enjoyed meeting everyone at work and even got the chance to work side-by-side with employees on an assembly line. Brooke Industries is affiliated with Ability One, which employs more than 45,000 people nationwide who are blind or have significant disabilities.
