Shaheen, Johnson Introduce Bipartisan Resolution to Commemorate 25th Anniversary of German Reunification

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), the lead Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) Subcommittee Chairman, introduced a resolution today to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of German reunification.

“I am proud to celebrate the great strides the people of a unified Germany have made in the last 25 years,” said Senator Shaheen. “Germany’s story is an example for nations and peoples around the world who struggle with political and social divisions. I congratulate the people of Germany on the upcoming Day of Unity and thank Germany for its continued commitment to the trans-Atlantic alliance, and its support for our mutual efforts to promote a more peaceful and prosperous world.”

“The 25th anniversary of Germany’s reunification is a milestone that we can all celebrate,” said Senator Johnson. “As we reflect on the victory of free enterprise over communism, we can be proud that we stood together for freedom.”

On October 3rd 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany to establish the reunited nation of Germany. The resolution celebrates 25 years of an undivided Germany, honors the sacrifices made by those who served in the Cold War, expresses appreciation for Germany’s ongoing commitment to preserving dignity and freedom around the world, and reaffirms the friendship between the United States and Germany.
