Hospital Protocol Remarks

{

In late 2021, while working in an intensive care unit at Aspirus Medical Center in Wausau, Wisconsin, I discovered what I came to understand was a widespread and serious problem in how hospitalized patients’ COVID-19 vaccination status was documented and displayed.

Our hospital used the Epic electronic medical record system. On the home screen of each patient’s chart appeared the patient’s COVID-19 vaccination status. At that institution, I observed only two categories: “Fully Vaccinated” and “Unknown.”

Because I was running ICUs, most records I opened belonged to critically ill patients. In November 2021—eleven months into the vaccine campaign— for the first time, I opened the chart of a patient who was identified as “Fully Vaccinated.” I recall being shocked because I hadn’t seen that before and immediately questioned why that was the first because I was well aware at that point of the gross inefficacy of the vaccines. So, I examined the record and found that the patient had been vaccinated in a physician’s office within the hospital’s own clinic system, allowing the vaccination to be entered into the electronic record.

In January of 2022, my father went to the hospital because of low oxygen levels. A CT scan confirmed a pulmonary embolism. Upon admission, he was alert and oriented and communicated with me continuously via text messages.

What followed was surreal and unlike anything I have ever experienced. Communication with my father stopped shortly after he was admitted. I struggled to obtain information. I watched his MyChart account constantly for updates. When I was finally able to speak to a nurse, I requested no interventions occur without discussing with me first per my father’s request. Despite this request, I received a call that the hospital had intubated him. I requested that the ventilator be discontinued, but my request was denied. My father never would have consented to a ventilator.

I’m a behavior analyst and have worked with individuals with special needs for more than 20 years. I entered the field after my son was diagnosed with autism in 2004. Tony was 55 years old and worked as a physical therapist assistant. Tony was a devoted husband, father, and advocate who played an important role in the lives of our family and community.

Tony tested positive for COVID-19 on August 6, 2021. When his breathing worsened, he contacted his doctor and was prescribed steroids. He was told to remain home unless his condition worsened and couldn’t breathe. On August 15, after his oxygen level had fallen into the 80s, his doctor instructed us to go to the hospital. She said we couldn’t get oxygen to the house even though his oxygen right then was 93%. She still sent him.

My remarks today are my own direct experience and opinion and not of any institution where I
have cared for my patients.

COVID-19 treatment was a process driven by a top-down approach. Information, including treatment dictates, was imposed on physicians rather than openly discussed. We were confronted with concerning recommendations regarding when to intubate, what medications were being recommended for or against, including the recommendations against steroid use early in the pandemic. Many of these recommendations were incongruent with standard practice in medicine including early intubation if they required more than 6 lpm of supplemental oxygen. Fortunately, we were in agreement that seemed ill advised and ultimately steroids were a key component requiring an individualized approach.

On October 29, my brother went to Montana hospital ER by ambulance because he was having trouble breathing due to COVID-19. He walked into that hospital and the medical records state, he declines remdesivir and baricitinib. He requests ivermectin. The ER doctors agreed with his wishes.

In between flights to Montana, I spoke with three nurses. Each gave the same reassuring answer when I asked how he was doing and whether he was going to die. They assured me his breathing was good and they did not believe he was going to die. One nurse told me the doctors were excited to use ivermectin because they had heard remarkable things about it and were eager to watch it work. I was told I could stand outside his hospital window.

At the start of the pandemic, I worked as a nurse case manager for a large Maryland medical system. I saw numerous patients discharged, still sick with COVID, lacking adequate planning. They had ineffective treatments and no home support. By fall 2021, I resigned. I could no longer take part in what I considered to be unethical care. For the next two years, I collaborated daily with medical professionals nationwide to help those affected by COVID access treatments community and hospital physicians were denying.

In the hospital cases I supported, patients were offered remdesivir and a ventilator as their only treatment option. Because there were no meaningful discussions about alternative treatments, patients and families would contact me for education and support. Once fully informed, hospitalized patients would often choose to pursue alternative options over the hospital protocol. Two patients of mine show why informed choice matters so critically.

On Friday, January 7, 2022, I brought my Dad, George Francis Dayton, age 69, to the ER. He had contracted COVID and was struggling to breathe. I brought him to the hospital instead of the clinic for his monoclonal antibody appointment (per the clinic’s recommendation).

This was the worst decision of my life.

The hospital was very busy. After he checked in, I was told to leave. Instead, I waited outside the ER by the security desk, hoping for updates. Hours passed. No updates came and my Dad didn’t have a cell phone.

In early 2020, I served as Director of Medical Services for Paralyzed Veterans of America. In that capacity I was responsible for quality of care, access to care, and benefits for catastrophically injured veterans living with spinal cord injury. I worked with VA medical centers nationwide on care that is highly specialized and, for this population, available almost exclusively inside the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The American people support Veterans receiving the finest care, especially veterans with catastrophic injuries connected to their service. The COVID-19 shutdown and vaccine protocols disproportionately robbed these veterans of the care they desperately needed and caused incalculable damage to this vulnerable population.

I am here today on behalf of my son, Chase Hayles. If he were alive today, I know with certainty that he would have come to tell his story himself.

Chase was a childhood cancer survivor. He was 33 and otherwise healthy when he was admitted to a West Houston Hospital for breathing problems on Nov. 14, 2021. He passed away this year on Feb. 18, after a five-year fight to receive a kidney transplant following what I believe was unauthorized and unnecessary Remdesivir treatment in November 2021.

I am a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I completed the didactics for a Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health, and Certified Nurse Midwifery, but was unable to complete my clinical hours due to COVID vaccine mandates despite documented antibodies.

I worked in telemetry, stroke, medsurg and then COVID units as a nurse in Santa Rosa, California, starting in August of 2015. During my six years of employment, I was recognized twice for outstanding patient care. I was fired October 1st 2021, after submitting a complaint against my hospital for being forced to participate in the unethical COVID hospital protocols, and for being required to take an experimental injection to maintain my employment.
